Physiofit sponsor Alderley Edge Cricket Club

This season we have been delighted to sponsor the Alderley Edge Cricket Club First XI. The new Physiofit logo looks great on their shirts, but sadly they just missed out on winning the League title this year. Hopefully next year the team photo will show the cup in its rightful place!

Acupuncture for LBP

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recently supported the use of acupuncture in the treatment of low back pain.” NICE recently published a recommendation that practitioners offer acupuncture to patients with LBP due to its effectiveness in treating the condition.

Physio, Claire Davidson reports “physiotherapists use acupuncture, against a background of sound research and evidence, as a means of reducing pain by stimulation of the brain to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals, such as endorphins, melatonin to promote sleep and serotonin to promote well-being. We get fantastic results not only with low back pain but many other conditions too”

Stuck for ideas for Christmas - get Wii Fit!

As Christmas fast approaches, perhaps you are looking for ideas for presents. The latest thing to come on the market which is ideal for promoting fitness, fun and well-being is the Wii Fit. The Wii Fit is a balance board with exercise-orientated activities which challenges the user to improve their fitness levels, balance and posture.

Physiotherapists have found that the Wii has the potential to help and motivate people to improve their fitness. It promotes body awareness and a good way to encourage more exercise in a fun environment. It can be a useful tool to use with children, particularly as they can visualise the exercises they are doing and can see instant results.

The Wii is not just for the young, however, it is also beneficial to the elderly to help with their balance and even memory issues and has been shown to be effective with people with disabilities and weight issues.

GET READY FOR THE SKI SEASON 2010

By Jean Thistleton

Now that the ski season is on its way we have put together some tips to help prevent accidents or injuries.

Most skiers spend the summer dreaming of last winters ski holiday and counting down the days till the next, whilst still trying to recover from last seasons injuries and gently getting less fit. Now is the time to begin the vital preparation of getting your body ready to hit those slopes once again.

Flexibility is an essential part of the pre-season preparation. Stretching on the day is no good! Actual flexibility and resistance to injury is built up over months and years. Time on the snow is short so you need to be in the best shape possible to ski and minimise the risk of injury!

Static stretches should last a minimum of 30 seconds up to 2 minutes with 2 - 4 reps of each exercise. After the initial 10 - 20 secs there is usually some noticeable “give” in the muscle being stretched. Continue to work on the muscles gently and smoothly with no bouncing. Stop if you feel pain!
Flexibility, core stability and balance are essential in injury prevention, especially of the leg, gluts and abs are the key focus. Pilates, swiss balls, yoga, martial arts and dance are great ways to improve flexibility and core stability in a more interactive environment. Stretching is natural and cost-effective and an extension to our daily routines, and works in harmony with our bodies and so can only be good for your skiing!

BUT REMEMBER! All bodies are different and for you to get the best exercises for your body you need expert assessment and advice. Why not treat yourself to a Posturefit assessment tailored to skiing to establish which areas need stretching and where you need to strengthen.
