Physiofit celebrates Older Person's Day by walking the Gritstone trail 3 times!
Every year the nation celebrates Older Person’s Day and this year it fell on Monday October 1st. Physiofit have previously hosted different events on the day to help people as they get older have an opportunity to try out different activities for free in Alderley Edge from bowling to nordic walking. In line with the CSPs theme – Hate exercise? Love activity, this year they focussed on increasing the number of steps walked each day during the week. They engaged the help of everyone in the community to cumulatively register the number of steps taken by our elderly residents whether this was the achievement of a few steps in the nursing home where they live or hiking in the local hills. By adding the steps together, the aim was to walk the length of the Gritstone trail and maybe back again. What they didn’t expect was with the enthusiasm and support of local care homes, care givers and local exercise classes the target was smashed within a couple of days amassing a huge 202432 steps and a distance of 154.25 km which means not only did the patients make it down the Gritstone Trail – they did it three times!
George breaks the 100-step barrier
This week we have seen some amazing efforts by many of the older generation in our community to get active! We have been completely blown away by how many people have got involved and achieved huge personal feats. One of these was George who at aged 80 smashed his target of 100 steps on day 4 which was a huge achievement - well done! Home Instead got their patients active locally and contributed another 5892 steps to our trail so a massive well done to their clients and care givers for getting involved.
Later life fitness classes
Our Physiofit for Later Life classes and our Neuro fitness class joined forces this week with another local exercise group, Extend in Wilmslow run by Angela Greensmith to see how many steps could be taken by each class, totalling a huge 15678 steps. We also had lots of patients from our local care homes. Sunrise Senior Living UK in Mobberley and Hale Barns made substantial contributions by gifting us their steps and wearing our pedometers over the week and also BUPA homes including Hazlemere House in Wilmslow, and Brookview in Alderely Edge who each took part in our Physio led walks around the homes. What made this year’s challenge so special was the sense of achievement felt by each patient whether they walked 2 steps or 2000. One patient had her first visit to the park in some time with our Physiotherapist Joe from our Later Life team and was so excited she rang the office to thank us.
Charity nordic walk
Physiofit hosted a charity nordic walk on October 1st with all donations being made to the Alzheimer's Society. We had a beautiful day and the sun shone brightly on us as we walked over 5km on the Edge before finishing with a mandatory coffee and cake at the Wizard cafe. The group donated their steps to our cause and amassed a huge 32678 steps.
Physiofit complete the Memory Walk
A Physiofit team took part in the Manchester Memory walk in aid of the Alzheimer's Society and donated our steps to our Older Persons Day campaign. Led by our practise manager Jane with a whopping 52040 steps completed (the 4 legged steps didn’t count!!) the team have raised over £100 for this worthwhile cause.
